The Center for Legal Aid – Voice in Bulgaria was invited to provide input to the United Nations Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR) for its upcoming session to examine the 6th report of Bulgaria. The meeting with NGOs will take place on 21 February in Geneva. In its submission, the CLA highlights six areas of concern regarding the social and economic rights of refugees and migrants in Bulgaria:
- Poor quality of refugee determination procedure and evident policy bias
- No vulnerability identification by Border or Migration police authorities
- Arbitrary and widespread detention practices persist
- Restricted access to judicial review of detention
- No paths to regularizing one’s legal status from within Bulgaria
- No housing options for persons in return proceedings
